Embracing Mental Health

The Impact of it All!

Lately, I've noticed an increase in advertisement for mental illness. This may partly be due to the political climate, the ongoing stress of covid-19 and the impact of the Black Lives Matter Movement.  Networks are broadcasting movies and films about mental illness. The media is capitalizing on the high incidence of police brutality and continuous unrest.  And we have a front row seat to all the pain and trauma experienced by our brothers and sisters.  While it is an asset to have digital recording at our fingertips, as it records and relays the truth, it also brings the pain of secondary trauma.  Secondary trauma is when we experience trauma by observing the trauma of others.  Everyday, as a community, we are exposed to different secondary traumas. And as we go about our daily lives, we carry this trauma with us.  Now comes the push to create awareness in our communities to  seek help for mental illness. Secondary trauma will likely intensify over time and may require professional attention at some point.  I know as well as anyone, that is difficult to disconnect from the events that make the news daily.  In fact, it is important that we stay informed and in touch with current events.  But, knowing when to say when is just as important.  Take a break from media exposure.  Be mindful of your stress level and find time to relax.  Take a walk, chat with a friend or read a book.  Seek out healthy ways to reduce stress.  Have discussions with your friends about how you feel about what's going on in the world around you. And if you notice emotional changes, loss of focus, changes in sleeping and eating, or other changes in your emotional well being, Seek support from a professional.  Embrace your mental health!!
